4-H Day Camp

On May 28th, Communities In Schools of Ottawa sponsored a 4-H Day Camp for the Reach for the Stars After School Program 4-H students. The kids enjoyed a day of swimming, crafts, boating, nature walks, and 4-H activities. We would like to thank JoEllen Aronld in the Franklin County Extension Office for helping to make this event possible.

Reality U

On October 14th Communities In Schools of Ottawa will host Reality U, a financial literacy program, to freshmen at Ottawa High School. Another Reality U event will be hosted in the spring for the sophmores.

Weekend Warriors

Beginning October 1st Communities In Schools of Ottawa will partner with Harvestors to distribute backpacks of nutritious food to area children on the weekends.

Careers On Wheels

On September 17th Communities In Schools of Ottawa will sponsor Careers On Wheels, a career exploration program for our fifth graders.

Dental Clinics

During the month of September Communities In Schools of Ottawa will bus students to the Douglas County Dental Clinic to receive exams, xrays, cleanings, flouride varnish, oral hygiene education, and dental sealants. Resource and Readiness Fair

On August 2nd ECKAN and Communities In Schools of Ottawa will host a Resouce and Readiness Fair to provide school supplies to area children and inform parents of the resources available to them in Franklin County. You must apply to ECKAN for school supplies to attend this event.

Kick Up Your Heels for Christmas

Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa University, and Wal-Mart teamed up this year to provide shoes to area children. Thanks to the support of our generous partners, we were able to give away over 350 pairs of shoes and socks.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

On May 12th Clifford the Big Red Dog visited Lincoln Elementary to talk to the 1st grade students about how to “BE BIG” in the community. He shared ideas on how to be respectful, be kind, and think of others.

Brilliant Bookworms

Our 3rd grade students are given a tour of the Ottawa Library and are introduced to the various resources available to them there.

Each child also recieves a library card.

Ace Readers

Communities In Schools of Ottawa has partnered with Future Visions to provide tutoring sessions for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. The program is called Ace Reader Pro. This program has won numerous industry awards and honors. It improves students’ reading speed, fluency, and comprehension by engaging students and their gaming skills. They have so much fun; they forget they are actually learning, too. With this game they are in constant competition with themselves to improve their reading speed and comprehension, thus moving on to the next level of skill tests.

We are so grateful to have recieved a grant from Walmart Transportation Division that allows up to ten of Lincoln Elementary students to recieve these tutoring services free of charge.
